It can be difficult to stand out in the Big Apple, but the New York International Auto Show has no issues attracting the spotlight. While car ownership in New York City may not be representative of the rest of the country, the city has long set nationwide trends in motion. According to the Verge “Automakers are coming here to play, because it’s one of the three most important car shows in the US.” Beginning March 25th, New Yorkers will flock to the New York International Auto Show to take a look at the newest vehicles that the auto industry has to offer.
The New York Auto Show has a rich and enduring history. The inaugural show took place in 1900 at the venerable Madison Square Garden. Approximately 160 vehicles were on display and the event drew 48,000 visitors. The prices of the vehicles on display ranged from $280 to a whopping $4,000 – about $114,00 today. In ensuing decades, the show found many different homes. It moved from Madison Square Garden to the Grand Central Palace to the New York Coliseum and, finally, it found its current home at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan. While it is only the 12th largest convention center in the United States, it is consistently one of the busiest.
It should come as no surprise that as 2015 was a record breaking year for auto sales, the New York Auto Show had a recording breaking year of its own. The 2015 Show attracted over 1 million visitors, the most in the show’s history. To put that number into perspective, New York City has an estimated population of over 8.4 million people. Additionally, the Show generated an estimated $300 million in economic activity – an astonishing number for a convention.
So, what will the 2016 New York International Auto Show bring? According to its website, “Ushering in the latest automotive trends, the 2016 New York International Auto Show will showcase an incredible collection of cutting-edge design and extraordinary innovation.
