Elio Motors Establishes a Pilot Operations Center in the Motor City

Earlier today, Elio Motors announced that it’s opening a Pilot Operations Center, where the company will assemble its E-Series vehicles, which will be used for a variety of testing and engineering purposes. As buildings go, the Pilot Operations Center in Livonia, Mich., is fairly non-descript. However, the vehicles that will be built inside of the facility will have a monumental effect on the safety, quality, performance, and even the appearance of the Elio vehicle, thanks to the testing they will endure.

At the recent press conference held at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Paul Elio discussed the importance of engineering and building this small test fleet. After an ambitious three-month period, during which the Elio’s major modules were engineered by our Product Development Teams, Elio Motors is prepping to begin the E-Series vehicle assembly.

In preparation for the build launch, Elio Motors has hired a seasoned, eight-person team, which is currently learning the E-Series vehicle’s systems and processes. The first E-Series vehicle that the team builds will be used initially by Continental Automotive to calibrate and test the anti-lock braking system, which it will supply for the Elio when it goes into commercial production.

Speaking of the E-Series vehicle build, Paul Elio said:

“Beginning the E-Series assembly is another important milestone in our journey toward production, as these test vehicles will allow our engineering and supplier teams to evaluate and validate our design. Commencement of the build will be another tangible sign of the progress we continue to make every day in our unrelenting quest to get this vehicle to market.”

The E-Series vehicles are an evolution of the prototype vehicles, named P1 through P5, which were built for Elio Motors by Technosports Creative. In fact, the Pilot Operations Center is located adjacent to Technosports Creative’s facility in Livonia to facilitate the transfer of knowledge that has accumulated as we movethe Elio from the prototype development phase to the E-Series.

Gino Raffin, who is Elio Motors’ Vice President of Manufacturing and Product Launch, concurred that the E-Series build is a monumental step for successfully moving the Elio from engineering and design development to eventual commercial production.

“The E-Series vehicles are an important bridge from the prototype phase to the commercial production phase. Building the E-Series vehicles in Detroit allows for a seamless and timely execution because the majority of our original equipment supplier partnerships are based here. All of the learning that we gain during the E-Series vehicle build also will be transitioned to our production facility in Shreveport for our 100 pre-production vehicle builds that are slated for the end of the year.”

Establishing the Pilot Operations Center in the Detroit area and hiring the build team for the E-Series vehicles are just the latest in an unrelenting series of events that are driving the Elio toward production, including:
