Elio Motors Tour goes to Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction

Hello Elio’ers! Being at Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction harkens back to a time when classic muscle cars came cloaked in “Sassy-Grass” or “Plum Crazy.” The average cost of a new car in the 60’s was right around $2,700 (without air-conditioning). Gas was just .32 cents a gallon and for that price, the attendant would check your tire pressure, your oil, clean your windshield, and you might even have received a commemorative glass, plate, or miniature model car with your fill-up. At that time, cars like the Ford Falcon, Mercury Comet, and the AMC Rambler were household names for economy/compact cars and led the way with features like a unibody suspension, gas saving engines and a seat belt option.

Today’s transportation gives buyers a lot to choose from. When they hear about the Elio for the first time, they tend to go “Plum Crazy” over the mileage, the price, and the clever engineering. Sure, long hair and beards are back, but most people today would gladly trade in their gas guzzlers for a quick, fun, and inexpensive daily commuter. Like these folks who came down to see us this weekend:

Bob and Diane go to A LOT of auto shows. He’s a minister and she’s a retired legal assistant. Diane rides a scooter around town, but it’s not fast enough to use on the highway in their new town of Cedar City, UT. So, Bob got to work browsing on the Internet. He was looking for a high-efficiency, low cost vehicle that was affordable and got better than average gas mileage. The Elio was a perfect fit, literally. Diane’s favorite color is the “Creamsicle… for visibility.”
