Three-wheeled car that gets 84 mpg is coming to the Bay Area
The Elio doesn’t look or act like a normal car.
The diminutive two-seater was designed to meet four must-haves: amazing mpg, uncompromised safety, all-American pedigree and low price, according to its website. Its narrow, lightweight (1,228 lbs.) frame helps it achieve up to 84 mpg highway — or 36 miles longer than the Toyota Prius. It’s equipped with three airbags, a reinforced roll-cage frame and anti-lock braking system. The company plans to create 1,500 manufacturing jobs and 1,500 jobs at supplier partner companies.
The car has a $6,800 sticker price. And it’s stopping by the Bay Area soon.
From August 28-30, Elio Motors will be at the Sonoma Raceway for the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma Indy Car Series. Then from Sept. 5-7, it’s coming to Sausalito for the Sausalito Art Festival.
Elio Motors brings its vehicle to the Bay Area after recent stops in the Midwest, Seattle and Oregon. It hopes to open a retail location in the San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont area. You’ll have plenty of time to decided if you want the car in Creamsicle (orange), Sour Apple (green) or Marshmallow (white). At CES in January 2015, the company said it anticipates a 2016 release date. More than 44,700 people have reserved the car on Elio Motors’ website.
