On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day capitalized on the emerging consciousness about air and water pollution, channeling the energy of the anti-war protest movement and putting environmental concerns front and center. As a result, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies.
Today, Earth Day is the largest civic event in the world, celebrated simultaneously around the globe by more than a billion people.
Elio Motors’ Green Impact
Unlike what we commonly consider to be indicative of a “green” vehicle, the 3-wheeled and 2-passenger tandem-seat Elio is powered by a three-cylinder, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected gas engine and posts some pretty impressive figures.
- The Elio is capable of returning up to 84 MPG during highway driving (49 city).
- When driven 15,000 miles annually, the Elio could save an owner roughly $1,500 in fuel costs.
- Over 10 years, the Elio could save American drivers 4.7 billion gallons of fuel a year and reduce CO2 emissions by 91 billion pounds.
Elio Motors Celebrates
Elio Motors has been invited to celebrate Earth Day at the NASA/Kennedy Space Center. Historically the event draws close to 30,000 attendees, with the intent to educate guests on sustainability and ways of reducing their carbon footprint. The fair focuses on three key elements to accelerate a transition to a cleaner and economically viable future; buildings, energy, and our personal favorite: transportation.
The NASA/Kennedy Space Center Earth Day Celebration is scheduled for April 22-23, 2015 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes a 2-day symposium with sustainability experts from around the country. Given The Kennedy Space Center has developed many of the cutting-edge renewable technologies used globally, both on the ground and in space, Elio Motors’ participation will play a role in educating consumers on how easily they can reduce their daily fossil fuel usage through the simple means of driving an Elio.
