When you mention “Virgin Galactic” most people who follow the news know who Sir Richard Branson is. They may even know that Virgin Galactic hopes to offer suborbital spaceflights aboard their commercial spacecraft for paying travelers in the very near future. The “White Knight” was the space module carrier for the first maiden voyage in 2014, and was on display for visitors to view at the Mohave Air and Spaceport this weekend. As guests of Virgin Galactic, Elio Motors was invited to present our very own version of innovative transportation at the fly-in event. As we gazed in awe of the sheer size of the spacecraft, a steady gathering of engineers and designers alike were discussing the P5’s efficient design and aerodynamic features. For this group, it wasn’t a question of HOW do we achieve such high mileage; they could see that the Elio had a similar drag co-efficient to many of the runway aircraft. For them, it was ‘what are you using?” In engineer speak it means: What engine, fuel, and materials are you employing? It was all about design specifics and our team of product specialists spent the day engaged with some of the brightest minds in the industry. In the end, what we all had in common was providing innovative modes of transportation that working class folks could enjoy.
Like Maureen. Maureen is a volunteer Squad Commander with the Civil Air Patrol. Her husband Al first saw us at “Hot August Nights” in Reno during a Barrett-Jackson event. Even though they already own 12 classic cars, Al brought Maureen back on day two to introduce her to their latest acquisition: The Elio! They went home and jumped in at #9882 that very evening. When Maureen saw the Elio trailer in the Spaceport parking lot, Maureen got on the hot line to invite all her friends and family down to see her “future ride!”
The P5 isn’t the only prototype on the road. The P4 was in Des Moines, Iowa today at the Capitol building. Legislators and FutureElioOwners alike checked out our three-wheeler. Nick W., a student at South Dakota School of Mines. drove 690 miles to see what he reserved and loved it! Just to think, next year he’ll only have to fill up once.
Take a look at the pictures from the Iowa event below…
